About the Role

VAFAW is seeking a treasurer to oversee its financial operations and budgeting and ensure compliance with laws/regulations. This is an officer role, uncompensated (volunteer only), and does not include routine bookkeeping. The ideal candidate has a background in finance and can help ensure the financial health of this growing organization. Nonprofit experience and passion for the mission is a bonus!

We are looking for someone to help with the following activities:

Financial Oversight

• Work with the bookkeeper to monitor the organization’s financial condition and sustainability.
• Review financial statements and reports monthly.
• Help identify financial risks.

Budgeting

• Review and provide input into the annual budget developed by staff and bookkeeper; present the budget to the board for approval.
• Monitor actual revenues and expenses against the budget throughout the year.
• Assist VAFAW leadership in completing financial data required for grant applications.

Reporting to the Board

• Provide quarterly financial reports for board meetings.
• Explain significant variances, trends, and financial concerns.
• Recommend financial policies or actions when needed.

Internal Controls and Compliance

• Help ensure appropriate financial controls are in place.
• Work with VAFAW’s accounting firm to ensure required tax filings and financial reports are accurately completed (e.g., annual IRS Form 990).
• Support compliance with grant requirements, state charitable registrations, and applicable laws.

About the Organisation

VAFAW is the only veterinary organization in the U.S. devoted solely to improving the welfare of farm animals. We advocate for animals used in food and fiber production by providing a veterinary perspective grounded in animal welfare and ethics. Our current focus areas are (1) preventing and mitigating pain experienced by farm animals; (2) promoting living environments that meet the animals’ physical and psychological needs; and (3) advancing humane end-of-life practices. We work towards this goal through education and advocacy.
