About the Role

Reports to: Director of Strategy, Research & MEL

Target start: December 2026, January 2027 if needed, later for the right candidate

Purpose: Own AAA’s research function: the country and intervention research that shapes where we work and which paths we point people towards. Support our monitoring and evaluation work, including cost-effectiveness analyses of the organisations we incubate, and the assessment and due diligence behind our grantmaking.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the research for our upcoming in-depth programmes, including ecosystem mapping, landscape analysis, and intervention and career path prioritisation.
  • Support our monitoring and evaluation work across everything we run, from outreach and entry programmes through to the organisations we incubate, including data collection, analysis and honest reporting of what it shows.
  • Conduct cost-effectiveness analyses of our incubated organisations.
  • Support assessment and due diligence for our regranting: evaluating incubation proposals, assessing pilot outcomes, and informing follow-on funding decisions.
  • Work closely with the Director of Strategy, Research & MEL on prioritisation and methodology.

Essential

  • Strong applied research skills, comfortable moving between desk research, stakeholder interviews, and quantitative analysis.
  • Able to reach clear conclusions under uncertainty and communicate them without overstating what the evidence supports.
  • Comfortable working independently in a small, fast-moving team.
  • Strong interest in effective animal advocacy and in the African context specifically.

Desirable

  • Experience with time-capped work.
  • Experience contributing to programme monitoring and evaluation.
  • Experience with cost-effectiveness analysis or similar prioritisation methods.
  • Familiarity with grantmaking, due diligence, or evaluation of early-stage organisations.
  • Experience working in or researching African contexts.
  • Comfort using data tools and AI-supported workflows.
  • Arabic (small plus for this role), French, or another regionally relevant language.

About the Organisation

Animal Advocacy Africa (AAA) works to empower animal advocates who are interested in or are working to reduce farmed animal suffering in African countries. AAA shares knowledge, provides connections, and helps advocates build the skills to run an impactful animal advocacy organisation. Over the course of our existence, we have helped advocates in Africa raise $200,000, connected them to international networks and helped with strategy development. We have also released research reports on animal advocacy in the African and Asian contexts. To learn more, visit our website. https://www.animaladvocacyafrica.org/
