
About the Role
The Operations Associate will be responsible for
Internal Operations
- Support HR and onboarding activities.
- Administer employee benefits.
- Onboard new staff members.
- Manage internal people processes.
- Order and distribute staff supplies and equipment.
Hiring and Recruitment
- Project manage hiring rounds.
- Assist with drafting hiring materials.
Finance Tasks
- Manage payments and reimbursements.
- Develop project budgets.
Contract and Grants Management
- Onboard and offboard contractors and grantees.
Event Planning and Logistics
- Coordinate an annual conference with 40–60 attendees, with the potential for more attendees in future years.
- Support regular research workshops.
- Coordinate annual team retreats.
The Operations Associate will report to the CEO. We will likely expand the team by adding an Operations Manager role in the next year.
About You
We’re open to many profiles and backgrounds for this role. Experience in agriculture, policy, advocacy, or research may be especially relevant, but we’ll consider candidates from any background who demonstrate the right mix of skills and disposition.
The ideal candidate has the following characteristics:
- Exceptional attention to detail: Operations work requires you to engage deeply with accounting, event logistics, and other areas that benefit from close attention to detail.
- Motivated by supporting others: This role involves supporting staff and event attendees. The ideal candidate finds helping others do their best work highly motivating.
- Strong written communication skills: You are able to draft clear internal and external communications.
- High conscientiousness: We aim to run events and operations that are excellent for staff and attendees. Your role will help ensure this is the case.
- A high degree of agency and personal accountability: Fairer Fields’ operating model and small size require staff who are comfortable managing their own time and driving their own results. We have minimal internal management and supervision, which means you will often be responsible for setting your own priorities and following through on them.
- Comfort moving quickly and working towards ambitious goals: We work in a highly goal-driven manner, often with quick turnaround times. The ideal candidate will work well under these conditions.
- Experience in at least one relevant area: The ideal candidate has experience in at least one of finance, HR, or event planning.
- Strong motivation for Fairer Fields’ work: The ideal candidate is highly motivated by Fairer Fields’ work, particularly efforts to improve the welfare of insects and other invertebrates.

Other Details
- Time Commitment: Full-time or part-time, with a minimum of 20 hours per week.
- Location: Remote, anywhere in the United States, with a preference for staff based in the Washington, D.C. area.
- Salary: $69,000 USD annually, prorated for part-time work.
- Travel: Required 4–5 times per year to attend events organised by Fairer Fields.
