About the Role
You will be supporting Eurogroup for Animals and its members in their effort to obtain an ambitious revision of the EU animal welfare legislation by lobbying in Hungary, a country of critical importance as the home-country of the current Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare Olivér Várhelyi.
You act as the primary point of contact, liaison and strategist for Eurogroup for Animals’ Hungarian members.
You design a strategy and in close collaboration with our members, you will carry out advocacy activities towards mostly national institutions and stakeholders, to try and influence the Commissioner by harnessing national political dynamics.
You work closely with the political, communications and technical teams at Eurogroup for animals and our Hungarian members to deliver excellent lobby outcomes.
Primary Responsibilities
Lobbying in Hungary while maximising the impact of our network
- You will lobby to achieve objectives and goals of Eurogroup for Animals and its members in line with our ambitious strategic frameworks.
- Deliver a political strategy and action plan for Hungary.
- Involving and engaging Eurogroup for Animals’ community of members, in Hungary to maximise pressure on national decision makers.
- Further support for Eurogroup for Animals’ policy goals within Hungary, specifically in relation to the forthcoming modernisation of the European animal welfare legislation.
- Produce advocacy arguments to shape key debates on European animal welfare policy within Hungary.
- Providing national decision makers with scientific advice and tailored European policy solutions.
- Report to Eurogroup for Animals on developments in Hungary.
- Contribute to EfAs advocacy towards Brussel-based Hungarian stakeholders, including the current Commissioner for Health and Animals Welfare.
- Shape tailored lobby tools (Draft oral/written questions, lobby briefs, letters) and contribute to the drafting of tailored communication tools.
Person Specification
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- A degree in political science, law or similar.
- Demonstrable knowledge and experience of EU public affairs, including in-depth knowledge of EU policy making and influencing processes.
- Demonstrable advocacy skills and knowledge.
- Fluency in English and Hungarian (spoken and written).
- Well-organised and focused on concrete results and deliverables.
- Analytical skills.
- Flexible and pragmatic.
- Excellent computer proficiency (Google Workspace).
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to write clear and concise reports.
- Good ability of working as team member and independently.
- Affinity with animal welfare issues and commitment towards Eurogroup for Animals mission.
Desirable Skills and Qualifications
- Background in animal advocacy.
- Fluency in one of the language of the attributed cluster.
- Knowledge of at least one other European language.
- Knowledge of Salesforce.
- Ability to use Project Management tools.
The person should have affinity with animal welfare and relate to the vision and mission of Eurogroup for Animals.

Practicalities
We are looking for a part-time consultant (50%), offering an assignment until February 2027, with the possibility of renewal subject to the continuation of funding.
The position is based in Hungary or within train distance from Budapest. Frequent presence in Budapest is essential. Travels to Brussels will take place.
