About the Role

In this role, you will be responsible for building and maintaining key relationships with FWI’s feed industry stakeholders to drive forward our fortified feed intervention.

The feed fortification intervention is a new program idea, and we have yet to build the pilot protocol and infrastructure to run a pilot. You will actively participate in this process by bringing your existing network with mills and farmers in Andhra Pradesh, which will be pivotal in helping us get this program off the ground.

Key Responsibilities

The Sales and Marketing Manager will be responsible for the following:

  • 1 – Feed Mill Relationship
    A. Establishment: Identify and build strong relationships with feed mills that will produce the feed required for our fortified feed program. Set up MoUs and get them signed.
    B. Maintenance: Over time, develop strong trust with feed mill representatives to maintain relationships. Ensure mills comply with production requirements and oversee quality checks.
    C. Strategic production guidance: Based on production and consumption volumes, determine the required number of mills to be engaged and engage new mills as necessary.
    D. Quality assurance: Ensure mills comply with production requirements and oversee quality checks.
  • 2 – Feed Marketing
    A. Strategic guidance: In partnership with other team members, develop marketing strategies to ensure sufficient farmer uptake of our fortified feed.
    B. Strategy implementation: Lead marketing projects and develop relevant materials. This may include organizing events, recruiting model farms, and similar.
    C. Event Representation: Attend industry fairs and similar events to advertise our fortified feed formulation and connect with relevant stakeholders.
  • 3 – Feed Distribution
    A. Trader/Dealer relationships: Build, maintain, and expand relationships with traders and dealers who could act as feed distributors.
    B. Exploration of other distribution channels: The price increase caused by trader/dealer involvement may inhibit uptake of our fortified feed. Alternative distribution channels may be more promising to keep costs low. You are responsible for coming up with these, implementing them, and evaluating their cost-effectiveness.
    C. Monitoring of existing channels: Ensure that the farmers who are buying our feed receive it within the agreed-upon timeframe. Own FWI’s feed delivery efforts and facilitate smooth operations.
  • 4 – Farmer Relationships
    A. Building and Maintenance: Become embedded in the farming community and build a strong network of farmers to get them interested in purchasing fortified feed. Tend to existing farmer relationships while building new relationships.
    B. Assistance on Incentive Management: Assist other team members responsible for developing and executing incentive structures (e.g., water quality monitoring visits), as needed.
    C. Scoping: Assist with scoping of new regions and farmer communities, as needed.

Requirements

  • Nationality: Indian nationals only.
  • Experience: 3+ years of field sales or business development experience at an aquaculture feed company (ideally in Andhra).
  • Language: You are fluent in Telugu and, ideally, proficient in written and oral English.
  • Location: Eluru, Andhra Pradesh.
  • Note that the exact location may change depending on which feed mills we engage. We thus encourage you to only apply if you are flexible to relocate.
  • Travel requirements: You should expect to travel extensively for this role.
  • Driving license: You have a valid driver’s license and are comfortable driving a motorbike/scooter on unpaved roads.

Desired Skills and Experience

The following attributes give you a sense of what the ideal candidate looks like.

  • Local network: You have strong relationships within the Andhra Pradesh feed mill industry and fish farming communities. Experience in other states is a plus.
  • Relationship building: You build and maintain key relationships to drive forward the department’s work.
  • High agency: You actively contribute your ideas to help build this program. You are proactive and able to develop your own schedule to achieve outcomes.
  • Openness to change: Taking the lean start-up approach, you test ideas quickly and adapt based on what we learn. You move fast, reassess often, and are willing to drop ideas that don’t work.
  • Values: You understand and honor FWI’s values and are interested in learning more about fish welfare.

The Fine Print

  • Position Status: Full-time.
  • Start Date: ASAP, with some flexibility.
  • Salary range: INR 60,000-85,000 per month (we may consider higher salaries for exceptional candidates)
  • Benefits: Apart from working with an extremely dedicated team on a vastly neglected field, FWI offers several employee benefits:
    • Accommodation Allowance: Paid for accommodation or allowance for employees living in field locations.
    • Reimbursement of up to 25,000 INR annually to purchase health insurance.
    • Free weekday lunch at FWI offices.
    • Generous paid time off (up to 40 days personal and caregiver leave and local holidays, depending on your country of residence).
    • Maternal and paternal leave.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What will the hiring process be like?
We expect a multi-stage process, with some candidates eliminated at each stage. The process will likely include:

    • Full application (CV, other questions; ~1 hour)
    • Interview 1 (~0.5 hours)
    • Test task (~4 hours)
    • Interview 2 (~1 hour)
    • Work trial (1-2 days)

Candidates who made it to the succeeding rounds will be updated regularly throughout the process. We expect to make a final offer to someone ~2 months after the application deadline closes.

  • I’m Indian but live outside of India. Can I do this job from anywhere?
No. This is an in-person position that requires extensive travel in Andhra Pradesh.
  • I’m fresh out of university. Can I apply for this position?
No, we unfortunately don’t accept freshers for this position. We require at least 3 years of experience in a feed sales or market development role.
  • I don’t have a university degree, can I apply?
Yes, if you meet the other criteria. We do not require a degree because we believe hands-on experience of having worked in feed sales is more important.
  • Will this job involve managing anyone?
Likely not. While the final structure of this program is still uncertain, we don’t expect you to directly manage anyone at this point. There may be opportunities to potentially manage Associates if and when the program scales.
  • What is it like to work at FWI?
See our blog for our recent culture surveys with unfiltered answers from our team.
  • I have another question about whether I should apply that isn’t listed here.
Then you should contact us—we’re happy to let you know whether you should apply, in order to potentially save you the time on filling out yet another application.

About the Organisation

Fish Welfare Initiative (FWI) is a relatively new, ACE-recommended organization whose mission is to improve the welfare of fishes as much as possible. We focus specifically on farmed fishes, or fishes raised in aquaculture. Our main country of implementation is India, where we currently work in the Nellore and West Godavari districts. As part of our Alliance for Responsible Aquaculture (ARA), we work with over 100 fish farms. Through this program, we estimate that we have already improved the lives of over one million fishes, though we intend to have a much greater impact in the coming years. Learn more about our plans and our organization in our blog.
