About the Role

As an independent contractor working closely with Animal Equality’s Investigations Department, the Undercover Investigator will be expected to carry out field research that supports Animal Equality’s strategic plan of advancing farmed animal protections globally. Responsibilities include documenting the conditions of animals raised for human consumption and providing the organization with compelling evidence for legal advocacy, public awareness, and corporate campaigns.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Conduct observational research into the conditions of farmed animals as assigned by the International Director of Investigations, following all organizational protocols to maintain high evidentiary standards and ensure timely and high-quality resultsProvide input on opportunities related to animal cruelty in German agricultural facilitiesConduct online research and develop profiles of facilities housing animals throughout GermanyGather information related to corporate misconduct, and environmental and animal welfare violations as necessaryReview footage and produce daily investigative logs while conducting observational field researchCooperate with solicitors, prosecutors, law enforcement, and other relevant Governmental enforcement agenciesTestify at hearings and court proceedings, as neededPreserve confidentiality regarding all sensitive investigation mattersEnsure timely submission of all investigative materialsProvide verbal/electronic updates to Animal Equality regarding case activity on a daily basisStrict compliance with German law

Position Requirements

Full alignment with Animal Equality’s mission and culture principlesAbility to work independently while socially isolated and in harsh conditionsComfortable working menial jobs for long hours in an agricultural setting while exposed to dead and dying animals, blood, feces, poor air quality, extreme noise levels, and other such conditionsExcellent attention to detailExperience with animals farmed for human consumption preferredMust be able to work flexible hours and days, including weekendsExcellent report writing skillsAbility to handle multiple priorities in a fast-changing environmentExtensive travel for long periods of time – 2-4 months per assignment, multiple assignments per yearSincere commitment to work in support of the organization’s programs, goals, and objectivesMaintain a professional attitude and appearance when representing Animal Equality during work-related interactionsAbility to maintain confidentiality at all timesStrong working knowledge of animal agricultural issuesResident of Germany with authorization to work

Fluency in English and German preferred, but English not requiredCurrent motor vehicle license
