About the Role

Animal Outlook’s Farm Transitions program seeks to provide farmers trapped within the system of animal agriculture with a method for divesting themselves from their current operation and retooling their resources for crop farming. At AO we believe that reducing the number of animals in production can and will make a positive impact on animal wellbeing, fair and just food systems, personal health and environmental degradation and that, in fact, removing animals from agriculture has the potential to be a leading catalyst for systemic changes in the food system and in climate change mitigation.

The program has developed a blueprint for scalable and replicable transitions that provides farmers with a comprehensive roadmap for identifying the potential successes and roadblocks of the transition process. The six stage, 36 step plan seeks to test a methodology for transitioning farms of any type into fully solvent crop production operations. The program will walk farmers through the legal, financial, and technical aspects of the upcoming transition, focusing on models of financing, guidance on architectural renovation and infrastructure, equipment compatibility, assessments of land capability, business planning, marketing consulting, and the rehoming of animals.

Animal Outlook will pilot its method of transition with its first prospective farm. This farm, located outside Dothan, AL, is a previous contract broiler farm seeking to transition the chicken house infrastructure into greenhouse production for ornamental house plants.

What will the intern gain from an internship at Animal Outlook?
1. The opportunity to work directly with a farmer in the development/implementation of their transition production plan.
2. Experience working within the farmed animal protection movement.
3. The chance to build on or gain skills in agronomic/horticultural planning.
4. Mentorship from the Director who has 15 years of experience in working with farmers transitioning farm systems.
5. The opportunity to visit farms in transition.
6. A front row seat to developing relationships with partner organizations and working collaboratively in a multi-organization setting.
7. Invitations to team meetings and organizational training.
